"Daymark, St. Martins, Isles of Scilly.
Artist: Stephen Morris
Watercolour with some pastel.
Original painting approx 9 ¾ wide inches by 27 ¾ inches tall.
SOLD
"This was painted on a clear, beautiful autumn day in 2008. Anyone who comes to the islands would immediately recognise this landmark. It is quite tall, standing just short of six and a half metres (I included a couple standing alongside to give it some sense of scale). Situated on the east of St. Martins on Chapel Down, it was built as a beacon in 1683 by Thomas Ekins, first steward of the Godolphin Family to live on the islands. You can still make out the original entrance, but it is now blocked in. Later the whole edifice was painted red and white as a navigation aid."
